In recent years, from the perspective of the SDGs and EHS, reducing the environmental impact of the entire apparel supply chain has become a very important management issue for the sustainable development of the industry.
Cotton is generally dyed using reactive dyes, but this dyeing process consumes a large amount of water and energy, and wastewater and CO2 emissions lead to environmental impact.
As a method to reduce this environmental burden, dyeing technology using cationized cotton can be considered. By using cationized cotton, it is possible to improve dye utilization, reduce the amount of dye used, and shorten the soaping process. It also leads to streamlining processes, reducing wastewater, reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
However, cationic cotton has a problem that dyeing speed is high and dye unevenness is likely to occur, which hinders the spread of cationic cotton.
In order to solve this problem, NICCA had worked on the development of a leveling agent for cationized cotton that suppresses the dye strike that causes uneven dyeing and realizes high-quality dyed products. I will introduce the development story.
What is Cationized cotton?
Cationized cotton is cotton that has a cation group introduced into the cellulose skeleton, and is an old technology. It can improve the efficiency of the dyeing process, such as improving build-up and shortening the soaping, as well as imparting design properties by blending with regular cotton.
In addition, cationized cotton can be dyed with reactive dyes or direct dyes without using Glauber's salt. For this reason, dyeing mills that are promoting the reuse of dyeing wastewater require to establish dyeing formulations for cationized cotton.
Excellent build-up and level dyeing
How to dye cationized cotton, which is prone to dye strike, without unevenness? The points for leveling dyeing were the following two.
(1) Slowly distribute dyestuffs throughout the Textile at the beginning of exhaustion
(2) Migrate and diffuse dyes in the Textile
